York IEE University
The United Learning Research Institute first established academic links with York IEE University in 2008, with a partnership being forged to look at the effectiveness of ACTIVexpression devices in the teaching of KS3 Maths. Since then, the ULRI has been working closely with Professor Bob Slavin, Professor Bette Chambers and Dr Mary Sheard at York IEE to determine the educational benefit of the ACTIVexpression devices when used in conjunction with the collaborative learning strategy ‘TechTeam Maths’. Since this inaugural work, the ULRI and York IEE have continued to work together, focusing on the effectiveness of ACTIVexpression in our academies through a study involving control and experimental groups.
The Institute of Effective Education, based in the Berrick Saul Building at the University of York, conducts high quality research on education programmes and practices, writes accessible systematic reviews of existing education research, encourages policy makers to support evidence-based programmes in education and develops, evaluates and disseminates effective education programmes for schools. The IEE is an independent organisation. It is not driven by current political trends, by what can be profitable, or by what contributes to scholarship alone. Its focus is establishing what works for children and young people, and communicating this information to educators, policy-makers, and researchers. The institute seeks not only to determine best practice in the classroom, but also to encourage a shift in educational policy to favour evidence-based reform.
